Candidates Are Not a Can of Tuna: Why Slow Interview Processes Lose Top Electrical Manufacturing Talent
Candidates Are Not a Can of Tuna
Yes, you read that right. I just compared people to food.
Here’s why. If the zombie apocalypse ever happens, we all want the stuff that basically never expires. Tuna. Protein bars. Rice. Beans. Peanut butter. We stockpile that because there’s almost no chance it goes bad before we use it.
Candidates are not that. Especially not the ones with specialized skills in electrical manufacturing, who are some of the most sought after people in the industry right now.
Now think about something that expires fast. Milk. Avocados, which I swear have a ten minute window between perfectly ripe and trash. That’s closer to what a top candidate looks like in today’s market. These are people who could swing a cat by the tail in any direction and land five job offers without trying.
So Why Do Interview Processes Still Take So Long?
Don’t wait on me to answer that one. I have no idea. Same way I have no idea why it takes people so long to grab their bag and get off the plane. I’m not going to pretend I understand it, I’m just pointing it out.
What I do know, after more than two decades recruiting inside electrical OEM manufacturing, transformer production, switchgear, and power equipment, is this: a month long interview process does not work anymore. Not for roles like these. Not in this market.
What Happens When You Move Too Slow
Specialized talent in transformer manufacturing, switchgear and protection systems, e-houses, and power distribution is not sitting around waiting for your third round of interviews. These candidates have options. If your process drags, someone else’s process won’t, and that’s who gets the offer accepted.
Companies that treat in demand candidates like they have no shelf life are the same companies that end up losing them to a competitor who simply moved faster.
The Takeaway for Hiring Managers in Electrical Manufacturing
If you are hiring for engineering, operations, or leadership roles in electrical infrastructure and power equipment manufacturing, speed is not optional anymore. It is the difference between landing the candidate you actually want and watching them go ripe somewhere else.
